Winter Styling
tips + tricks to stay warm + chic
As we transition out of fall and into winter, I wanted to share with you all my favorite ways I style my staple winter pieces (you can get a closer look at outfit details on my IG).
Oversized Blazer Borrow from the boys! Father, husband, brother, boyfriend, cousin, uncle, friend – whichever man in your life that is willing to share his wardrobe with you. Go for it. The key here is that you cinch your waist with a belt. This prevents the fabric from swallowing you up - especially for all my petite gals. You don’t want it to look like you are borrowing a blazer from your dad even though you are ;) Another tip, is when you scrunch up the sleeves use an elastic to hold the scrunch all day and or night long!
Turtlenecks Oh how do I love a turtleneck… they are so simple but can add this element of elegance to an outfit. It can keep you warm on its own but also is a great layering piece to keep you even more warm– you can wear under dresses, sweaters, flannel or dress shirt. This year I bought the Commando body suite turtleneck which is great because I can style it with leather leggings or skirts and not have to worry about the fabric bunching when pairing with tighter bottoms.
Tights The ultimate winter accessory! I love classic black tights with a dress but you can also play up an outfit with some fun polka dot tights, mini heart tights and of course the currently coveted Chanel logo tights. Remember, there is no need to sacrifice comfort to wear a dress or skirt this season - slip the tights on. Not only do they keep you warm but honestly, I find them pretty sexy and feminine. Also, whenever you purchase a new pair of tights make sure to run them under cold water, wring it out, place in a plastic bag, put in freezer overnight and the next morning lay them out to thaw. Once the tights are dry the fibers will have become stronger and are ready to wear.
Scarves Another fabulous winter accessory that can be styled in tons of different ways! And who doesn’t love a versatile piece? We all know the timeless ways we can tie our scarves like a classic loop, cowl, etc. but my go-to is to style a blanket scarf as a cape wrap. I secure this cozy and chic look with a belt. I also recommend draping a scarf around your neck and letting it hang down only in front and belt it under an overcoat for added warmth.
Dress Shirts This is another piece you can borrow (or keep) from a man in your life. I usually stick to only white dress shirts, but a light blue could also work nicely. In order to make this oversized look intentional, be strategic with the pants you pair it with it. Stay away from skinny jeans to avoid the bulgy look – instead turn to straight/mom jeans or loose-fitting trousers. The key here is that you put the effort in the tuck because if you don’t it will just look messy and that’s not cute. (Little note, I love “borrowing” a white linen dress shirt as a beach cover up – it gives a very effortless yet romantic look)
